Meine Güte… ich hab noch nie einen (für mich) derart perfekt funktionierenden schnellen Switch von ISO 8859-1 zu UTF-8 erlebt. Vielen, vielen Dank, es hat super funktioniert und keinerlei Probleme aufgeworfen. Selbst die Umlaute wurden mit der convert2utf8-Extension perfekt übernommen

Despite the utf-8 settings, there’s tables that still get created with Latin charsets. Only once the database structure itself is set to utf-8, then all new tables are utf-8.

Hey Michael Cannon,
the database’s default charset automatically changes once you set
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['BE']['forceCharset'] = "utf-8";
with the Install Tool.

Great tips for the Latin to UTF-8 encoding.

For the TYPO3 4.2 series when starting fresh, you’ll probably not these tips. For folks doing the upgrade from older systems, these directions are on target.

You should also mention about setting the database’s default charset to UTF-8 if not already done so. It’ll help prevent new extensions from getting the latin-swedish encoding.
